With just over a week to go before the Amalgamation Awareness Conference things are really back in high gear these days. The Conference Committee has been extremely busy on the phones, the computers and of course in person making sure things are all coming together for the event.
It has been confirmed that among the guest speakers arriving in Victoria County for the day are Joe Cooper, a weekly columnist with the East York Mirror; Ruth Cohen, author of the book "Alien Invasion, How the Harris Tories Mismanaged Ontario"; and Michael Prue, NDP Critic for Municipal Affairs.
Other attendees for the day include representatives from Meaford, Walkerton, Cardinal-Edwardsburgh Township, Bluewater, and numerous other municipalities throughout Ontario and some from as far away as Montreal. By way of this column, I'm hoping that our local Councillors will all take note and will mark the function on their calendars as well.
VOCO is pleased to be sponsoring this conference that will be held at the Lakeview Banquet Hall (Cty. Rd. 17 between Bobcaygeon and Lindsay) with the doors opening at 10am and running until 4pm. Lunch will be provided and they hope Victoria County residents will make use of, and support, this function in our own backyard as we welcome our friends and neighbours from beyond the area to listen, learn and interact with each other. There is no admission charge so call your friends and neighbours and join us on Saturday, April 27th.
I'd also like to take a moment and let you know of another local initiative now on the streets of the County: a Postcard Campaign addressed to our local MPP, the continuing Minister of Municipal Affairs. Whether you signed the petition, or voted in the Referendum or even if you missed those opportunities to express your opinion, watch for the postcards making their way around and be sure to add your signature this time. The postcards will be forwarded directly to MPP Hodgson. In case he's forgotten who we are, this will just be another gentle reminder that his constituents up here are still awaiting his attention.
To the people that are still calling and emailing us inquiring where they can obtain 'VOCO ribbons', may I just remind you that ANY yellow ribbon can be used to display your support for democracy. On your mailbox, your tree, your car aerial, your lapel, your fencepost ... all are locations that ribbons have been displayed and each ribbon reminds the politicians that the people are watching and do hold them accountable. The ballot box may be available for one day, but the people are watching every day.
The next general meeting for VOCO will be held next Thursday, April 25th at The Full Cup Cafe (Bobcaygeon) beginning at 7:30pm. Everyone is always welcome, and for the latest VOCO news and events please continue checking our website at www.voconews.com .
